Pandemic, Happier Society

The decline in the quality of people's health and economy has a wide impact on various aspects of life. However, in the midst of these limitations, the 2021 Indonesia Happiness Index has actually increased compared to before the pandemic.
Towards the end of 2021, the Central Statistics Agency launched the Indonesia Happiness Index (IKI) 2021. As a result, people's happiness reached a value of 71.49 or an increase compared to the similar index in 2017 of 70.69 percent. The IKI was obtained through the 2021 Happiness Level Measurement Survey (SPKT) which was conducted on 75,000 households in 34 provinces on 1 July-27 August 2021. Of all these indicators, the values of 13 indicators increased and three indicators decreased. The three indicators that decreased in value were "feeling not worried or anxious" and "not depressed" in the feeling dimension as well as indicators of "life purpose" in the dimension of the meaning of life. Diana Setiyawati, Head of the Center for Community Mental Health, Faculty of Psychology, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, said the pandemic did increase distress or negative stress due to the magnitude of pressure and social changes that society had to face. However, the increase may not be significant in Indonesia. When faced with pressure, people's lives usually stop for a moment and force them to adapt by changing their life strategies. However, only a small proportion of Indonesians who experience this distress develop mental problems, let alone become a mental disorder or illness.
