1.12 Million Vaccine Doses Expired

More than 1 million doses of vaccine actually expire at a time when many people have not yet received the first and second doses of vaccine. From about 208 million people targeted for vaccination, as of Wednesday (19/1/2022) there are still 30 million people who have not received the first dose of vaccine and 86.7 million people have not received the second dose.
The coverage is not even. The achievement of the first dose of vaccination in DKI Jakarta, Bali, DI Yogyakarta, and Riau Islands has exceeded the target or is above 100 percent. However, in Maluku, West Papua, and Papua it is still below 70 percent. The number of expired vaccines was also questioned by members of Commission IX of the House of Representatives during a working meeting with the Ministry of Health, Tuesday. The parliament also reminded the vaccination gap because coverage in several provinces in eastern Indonesia was not yet optimal. Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that until December 2021 there were 1.12 million doses of expired vaccines. Around 98 percent or 1.1 million doses are donated vaccines from developed countries. According to Budi, initially the vaccine will be donated by donor countries to Africa. However, due to the low ability to inject vaccines and inadequate cold chain, vaccine donations were diverted to other countries, including Indonesia. "Developed countries buy vaccines in bondage. They save, it turns out there are many left. This is why at the end of the year many are sent to us (Indonesia). I just take it, it's free," he said. Budi said the majority of vaccines were products from AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna. The expired vaccines were spread across a number of provinces, including West Java (272,000 doses), Central Java (148,000 doses), South Sulawesi (120,000 doses), East Java (104,000 doses), and Banten (90,000 doses).
