Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Reveals INDONESIA's Strategy to Reach Carbon Neutral Target by 2060

Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif revealed a number of long-term strategies in the energy sector to be able to achieve the target of carbon neutral or net zero emission (free of carbon emissions) by 2060.
"In the energy sector, we are targeting to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 or faster with international assistance with a number of strategies. First, through the development of massive new and renewable energy (EBT)," said Arifin in a webinar entitled "Indonesia-Norway Investment Opportunities in Hydro and Solar Energy in Indonesia" organized by the Indonesian Embassy in Oslo, Monday. EBT development includes solar panels, wind, biomass, geothermal, hydropower, marine, hydrogen, as well as Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Another strategy is to reduce the utilization of fossil energy sources by "co-firing" biomass and retiring steam power plants (PLTU) and gas and steam power plants (PLTGU). "The last PLTU will be terminated in 2058 and the PLTGU in 2054," he said. During that period, it was noted that no new PLTU was allowed, unless it already had a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) or was under construction.
