It's Time to Seriously Protect Personal Data

The leak of a certificate requesting the issuance of an identity card belonging to the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries 2014-2019 Susi Pudjiastuti on social media after being used as food wrappers shows that the state is still weak in protecting personal data.
The government is expected to have clear standards in the storage of population archives. On December 24, 2021, a letter of application for an identity card (KTP) belonging to Susi Pudjiastuti was spread on social media because it was used as food wrappers. The certificate is accompanied by a photo of Susi and a family card number for making an ID card at the Pangandaran District Office, Pangandaran Regency, West Java. Through her Twitter account, Susi considers what happened to her as a common occurrence. This is because the protection of personal data in Indonesia is still weak. “Isn't this kind of thing common? Protest where? To whom? Every day we get WA (Whatsapp) online loans, investments, promos, and others. Everyone knows our numbers, our data," wrote Susi. Prior to this case, personal data allegedly belonging to President Joko Widodo became a hot topic of conversation on social media. The @huftbosan account uploaded a Covid-19 vaccination certificate on behalf of Ir Joko Widodo, complete with a population identification number (NIK), date of birth, and time of vaccination. The Executive Director of the Institute for Community Studies and Advocacy, Wahyudi Djafar, said that this issue shows the lack of awareness of the authorities in protecting personal data. In fact, it is most basic in accordance with the Population Administration Law. Resident data is classified as personal data which must be protected as regulated in Article 84.
